One of the numerous attractions for visitors to Tuscany is the range of excellent wines produced by wineries in almost every corner of the Region. The most famous of these are the coastal strip north and south of Bolgheri, the Montalcino-Montepulciano area of southern Tuscany, and the Chianti Classico area between Florence and Sienna. There are several ways to get to know the wines of Chianti during your vacation in Tuscany. Obviously you can and should have a bottle of Chianti with your dinner, whether you're eating out or preparing your own meals in a self-catering vacation rental and by this means you will soon discover vineyards producing wine to your taste. You can spend an hour ot two, or even a whole evening at an enoteca, of which there are several quite good one in the Region. In Greve in Chianti, there is Le Cantine which has a very modern system that allows you to taste a considerable range of Chianti wines at modest cost. The Enoteca Italiana in Sienna is another famous wine tasting locale. Yet another approach is simply to drop in at any of the numerous wineries that have a "degustazione" sign posted by the side of the road while you are out sightseeing. (The driver should "taste and spit" - the roads of Chianti are not designed for drivers influenced by wine!) A more expensive but highly efficient approach to tasting and learning about Chianti Classico wines and wineries is to take a one day, group or private, minibus wine tour. As long as you find a good driver-guide, a minibus tour will ensure that the vineyard you visit is open, it may well take you to vineyards that are not usually open to the public, and will provide an educational and entertaining commentary both during the trip and at the locations you visit.
